Eerder maakte Aram Bartholl al mooi inzichtelijk hoe gehackte LinkedIn-wachtwoorden er in fysieke vorm uit zouden zien. Nu doet hij hetzelfde met locaties in Google Maps. Over zijn werk Map:
In the city center series ‘Map’ is set up at the exact spot where Google Maps assumes to be the city center of the city. Transferred to physical space the map marker questions the relation of the digital information space to every day life public city space. The perception of the city is increasingly influenced by geolocation services.

Wat is er te halen uit een catalogus van 800.000 pornofilmtitels? Binnen het project Sexualitics houdt een team van vijf onderzoekers zich daarmee bezig. Met één van de tools die ze ontwikkelden, Porngram, wordt de ontwikkeling van woordgebruik in filmtitels gevisualiseerd. De dataset is hier te vinden. Uit de onderzoekspaper:
The development of the web has increased the diversity of pornographic content, and at the same time the rise of online platforms has initiated a new trend of quantitative research that makes possible the analysis of data on an unprecedented scale. This paper explores the application of a quantitative approach to publicly available data collected from pornographic websites. Several analyses are applied to these digital traces with a focus on keywords describing videos and their underlying categorization systems. The analysis of a large network of tags shows that the accumulation of categories does not separate scripts from each other, but instead draws a multitude of significant paths between fuzzy categories. The datasets and tools we describe have been made publicly available for further study.

Over onderstaande zoekopdracht: zo’n 15 jaar geleden verzorgden we vanuit een eigen bedrijf het entertainmentgedeelte van sites als Wanadoo en Sonera Plaza. Op een gegeven moment ontstond daarbij in alle meligheid over berichten als biologische-groentetuin-in-garage-van-Noel-Gallagher, de fictieve film Transexual Horse Lover. Ik had nooit gedacht dat die titel nog eens van pas zou komen. 🙂

Enerzijds prachtig, deze video Beauty van Rino Stefano Tagliafierro. De wijze waarop hij klassieke schilderkunst digitaal tot leven wekt is op een bepaalde manier onweerstaanbaar. Tegelijkertijd is het effect dat hij daarvoor gebruikt eenvormig en repetitief. Daardoor bekroop me op een gegeven moment het gevoel alsof ik naar de voorspelbaar bewegende figuren uit het sprookjespark van De Efteling zat te kijken. Al met al kan ik me wel goed vinden in het oordeel van The Guardian:
It’s only putting on screen what our imaginations do when we look at powerful works of art. We are all film directors or novelists in our heads, imagining worlds inside the paintings, telling ourselves the stories incited by the pictures. Beauty makes those imaginative encounters luridly visible.

Ik vind het echt mooi om te zien hoe Jenny Rose Halperin haar energie steekt in het samenbrengen van Mozilla en de bibliotheek. Op het blog Mozillarian is hier heel veel over te lezen. In het manifest aldaar staat beschreven wat het concept inhoudt:

Al eerder scheef ik over ons contact met Wim Benes, een vertaler van Mozilla-applicaties als Firefox en Thunderbird naar het Fries. Vandaag zaten we (Bertus Douwes, Aan Kootstra en ikzelf) voor het eerst fysiek met Wim om tafel.
Onderwerp van gesprek was of we vanuit het project FryskLab de Mozilla-initiatieven Webmaker en de standaard voor webgeletterdheid handen en voeten kunnen geven. Denk daarbij allereerst aan het verzorgen van Nederlandstalige versies. Maar daarna natuurlijk aan inzet van Webmakertools en onderliggende webgeletterdheid binnen lessen en workshops. De reden waarom we dat belangrijk vinden wordt prima verwoord in de filosofie van Webmaker:
We’re a global community dedicated to teaching digital skills and web literacy. We explore, tinker and create together to build a web that’s open and made by everyone.
We zien beide veel mogelijkheden en gaan de komende weken uitzoeken wat binnen bepaalde tijd al dan niet haalbaar is. Later meer dus. En mocht je denken, “Hee, dit vind ik leuk om aan mee te doen!“, laat het dan even weten.
