Een gem uit het archief van het onvolprezen WFMU:
Today, a relatively brief piece of tape (just under 12 minutes) that I find quite magical. It was buried deep in the middle of side two of a tape which was otherwise taken up with musical performances. The text on the box indicated that all of the recordings contained on it were from 1953, with this particular one specified as having been made on December 25, with the added note “Todd’s first talking Christmas”.
What you’ll hear is a sound which will be (and has been) no doubt repeated all over the world this December, and every December for more years than any of us have been here. Things start off relatively quietly, with toddler Todd being walked through the opening of a handful of gifts, before daddy steers him towards something special – a train! Around the eight minute mark of this tape, Todd gets cranky for just a minute, but it passes very quickly (with the help of some questionable, yet tried and true words, from his parents), and within two minutes he is shrieking with joy at his new toy.
I love the end of this tape regardless, but particularly when heard after the section with the gift being received, the last two minutes here are, to my ears, pure magic.

Wat een leuk experiment is dit: het printen van een LP, waarbij de muziek van oorsprong digitaal is. Maakster Amanda Ghassaei:
I’ve created a technique for converting digital audio files into 3D printable 33rpm records and printed some functional prototypes over the weekend. These records play on regular turntables, with regular needles, at regular speeds, just like any vinyl record. The audio on the records is very low resolution (as you can hear), it has a sampling rate of 11kHz (a quarter of typical mp3 audio) and 5-6bit resolution (mp3 audio is 16 bit). Enkele weken geleden droeg ik voor het eerst bij aan een Kickstarterproject: The ACME Corporation. Hierdoor mag ik mij verheugen op een gigantisch affiche met daarop alle explosieven en andere hulpmiddelen waarmee Wile E. Coyote trachtte Road Runner te pakken te krijgen. Omdat deze echter pas in januari geleverd worden (het project eindigt vandaag) heeft Rob Loukotka, verantwoordelijk voor dit initiatief, e-cards beschikbaar gesteld voor iedereen met interesse in The Acme Corporation. Bij deze!

Kan je je voorstellen hoe Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne en AC/DC voor een groep kinderen liedjes zouden vertolken? Standup comedian Jim Breuer kan dat zeker. Ik kende hem tot gisteren nog niet, totdat ik onderstaande geweldige video op Youtube tegenkwam. Maar wat het nog mooier maakt is dat er, ontdekte ik zojuist, een remix van het fragment is gemaakt door melodysheep. Mooi toch dat internet.
