Mocht je je de onbedwingbare behoefte hebben je fiets op te vouwen, maar af te willen van het kindertweewielergevoel dan is bovenstaande schitterende singlespeed wellicht een optie. Deze fiets, genaamd International is ontworpen door Kinfolk Bicycle Company en opvouwbaar en weg te stoppen in de schoudertas hieronder.
Despite the perils of potholes and truckers’ blind spots, team Wallpaper* are committed urban cyclists. So committed that we commissioned a bike, two in fact, that could be broken down (using very clever and super-sturdy S&S couplers), packed in a bespoke bag and loaded on a plane, with no excess baggage charge, and taken with us wherever we went. The project pulled in a wide range of craftsmen collaborators from the US, UK and Japan – frame builders, designers, paint specialists, saddle makers, leather carvers and bag and luggage makers – to ensure that every element of the bike was as beautifully put together as it could be.
Het frame wordt in Osaka handgemaakt door de 71-jarige Shuhichi Kusaka en alhier verkocht, vanzelfsprekend in gelimiteerde oplage. Goed, het kost wel wat, maar dan heb je wel een ros dat meedong naar de Wallpaper Design Awards 2010.

Concertreeks voor ongeboren kinderen
Het Tsjechisch Philharmonisch Orkest heeft een concertreeks ontwikkeld, speciaal voor zwangere vrouwen en hun ongeboren kind(eren). De uit zestien concerten bestaande serie, getitield Music in utero, is waarschijnlijk ingegeven door onderzoek van de Amerikaanse wetenschapster Sheila Woodward. Zij heeft aangetoond dat ongeboren kinderen vanaf 17 à 19 weken reageren op muzikale impulsen:
Sheila C. Woodward of USC has shown that fetuses in the womb begin responding to music at 17-19 weeks gestation and that they most strongly respond to consonant, not dissonant intervals: 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and octaves. She has also shown that babies cry in consonant intervals, regardless of cultural background. This appears to be hardwired in the human brain, although we can be conditioned to respond to dissonant frequencies as in the above quoted Lebanese love songs. Babies also respond most strongly to steady tempos. But after that, musically, we are a blank page until we learn the “cultural rules.”

Piraterijbestrijders de schaamte voorbij

Je zou kunnen denken dat het slechts een waanzinnige gedachte van Bono was, maar nu grijpen ook de georganiseerde Amerikaanse piraterijbestrijders het met beide handen aan: de (succesvolle?) bestrijding van kinderporno als voorbeeld stellen voor de aanpak van het illegaal downloaden van muziek, films etc. Dit doet Techdirt uit de doeken in Recording Industry Using Net Neutrality Debate To Try To Link Child Porn With Copyright Infringement Again. In een brief gericht aan Google en Verizon wijst de groep behartigers (RIAA, A2IM, AFM, AFTRA, ASCAP, BMI, NMPA, SESAC, SoundExchange, Recording Academy, California Songwriters Association, Music Managers Forum en Nashville Songwriters Association International) op het nog ontbreken van een, naar hun mening, passend antwoord op illegaal downloaden en kinderporno:
The music community we represent believes it is vital that any Internet policy initiative permit and encourage ISPs and other intermediaries to take measures to deter unlawful activity such as copyright infringement and child pornography.”
Helaas is dit geluid niet nieuw. Eerder dit jaar stak de Deense advocaat Johan Schluter al de loftrompet over het kunnen gebruiken van kinderporno als voorbeeld:
Child pornography is great. […] It is great because politicians understand child pornography. By playing that card, we can get them to act, and start blocking sites. And once they have done that, we can get them to start blocking file sharing sites. […] One day we will have a giant filter that we develop in close cooperation with IFPI and MPA. We continuously monitor the child porn on the net, to show the politicians that filtering works. Child porn is an issue they understand.”

Goed om even stil te staan bij het feit dat deze belangenbehartigers het bestaan van kinderporno blijkbaar toejuichen, enkel en alleen omdat het zo’n sprekend voorbeeld is.
