Hackerfilms in de bieb

Een initiatief naar mijn hart, Free Kevin. Wat het is?

FREE KEVIN is an ongoing and roving screening series from a collection of 15.4 GB of downloaded films and documentaries depicting hackers and related computer culture from the 1980s-2000s. A range of material including blockbuster films, educational television programming, and documentaries produced within the hacking community will be presented in various cities worldwide over the next year in order to stimulate dialogue around issues of intellectual property and open culture.”

De films zijn verzameld door Pirate Bay-gebruiker pirateturk. De avond van de screening biedt tevens de mogelijkheid dit- en verwant materiaal onderling uit te wisselen, dus wordt aangeraden USB-sticks en harddrives mee te nemen. The Pirate Bay zal binnenkort ook worden gebruikt om een PDF van het programma en andere relevante gegevens beschikbaar te stellen. Hiermee is het mogelijk ook elders vertoningen te organiseren. Dat ik me daartoe wel geroepen voel, zal bezoekers van mijn blog waarschijnlijk niet verbazen.

Free Kevin is een initiatief van General Public Library, een project waarbij verschillende personen een idee kunnen verwezenlijken dat aansluit bij de doelstelling van initiator Mylinh Nguyen:

Nguyen approaches the idea of a library with a unique focus on participation and the formation of community. In contrast to a traditional reading room–which can only be accessed for the duration of the show—the online catalogue of the General Public Library allows each visitor to browse and curate their own library within an existing and continually growing catalogue, beyond the physical installation. Each donation, as it is made, will be logged into the library cataloging system. As libraries begin to form and overlap, each book becomes a link between the book donor and other participants in the library. Inversely, when viewing one book, it is possible to see the interests of other participants.”

De invulling van het programma met Free Kevin komt uit de koker van Laurel Ptak. Ik kan niet anders zeggen dan “Hulde!”

Reizende vuurtorenbibliotheek

De reisbibliotheek bevatte hoofdzakelijk fictieboeken, maar op verzoek ook technische titels.

Om ook vuurtorenwachters en hun families van boeken te voorzien werd voor hen in 1876 in de Amerikaanse staat Michigan een portable library geïntroduceerd. De reden daarvoor was dat

Lighthouses were often time located in remote areas and as such had no access to city services such as libraries, opera houses, entertainment, etc. that most people enjoyed who lived in a town or city. As light keeping was a lonely profession in most cases supplies were brought to them by lighthouse tender ships. One of the items the tender supplied was a library box on each visit as pictured to the left. Library boxes were filled with books and switched from station to station to supply different reading materials to the families.”

Eigenlijk een voorloper van de bibliobus dus. Geweldig. En met dank overigens aan Boingboing, dat een artikel aan de reisbibliotheek wijdde.

Elk boek uit de reisbibliotheek was voorzien van dit ex-libriszegel.

Verspreiding historisch audiomateriaal juridisch gefrustreerd

In een vrij uitvoerige post op Ars Technica, Historic audio at risk, thanks to bad copyright laws, wordt vandaag aandacht besteed aan het met moeite toegang hebben tot-, delen- en bewaren van historische geluidsopnames. Zonder het gehele bericht te willen herhalen onderstaand een fragment uit de tekst dat de problematiek treffend verwoordt:

A scholar researching the history of vaudeville might have a strong interest in hearing recordings made by the first vaudevillians—recordings that came before the recording horn. These performers may have been headliners in their time, but today their names are virtually unknown. While scholarly interest in these recordings is high, their economic value to the property holder is negligible. However, legal restrictions governing access to a cylinder produced in 1909 are the same as those governing a compact disc made in 2009, even though it is highly unlikely that the 1909 recording has any revenue potential for the rights holder.”

Het National Recording Preservation Board van het Library of Congress doet daarom een aantal aanbevelingen om de situatie te verbeteren. Hieronder vallen onder andere het decriminaliseren van gebruik van verweesde werken en het voor bibliotheken eenvoudiger maken werk te kunnen verveelvoudigen en delen.

Week van de verbannen boeken

Eigenlijk ben ik net een dag te laat, want de Banned Books Week is gisteren juist afgelopen. Desondanks toch nog maar een korte verwijzing naar dit evenement dat als doelstelling heeft:

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society.”

Open Culture schrijft dat pogingen boeken in Amerika te censureren voor een groot deel buiten het publieke blikveld plaatsvinden. Op een Google Map is aangegeven waar initiatieven hiertoe ondernomen zijn, maar volgens de site is dit nog maar 20-25% van het werkelijke aantal. Het onvolprezen Internet Archive biedt in het kader van Banned Books Week toegang tot 74 boeken die ooit onder vuur lagen, uiteenlopend van Winnie The Pooh tot Mein Kampf.

De toekomst van auteursrecht in muziek als strip

Auteursrechtprofessor James Boyle, hier al vaker voorbij gekomen, werkt momenteel aan de comic Theft: A History of Music. Met dit stripboek, waaruit onderstaand fragment afkomstig is, wil Boyle duidelijk maken het fenomeen delen een fundamenteel onderdeel uitmaakt van muziek, haar geschiedenis en idealiter ook haar toekomst. In de huidige strijd om auteursrechten zou deze verworvenheid volgens Boyle in ogenschouw genomen moeten worden, want die toekomst staat onder druk:

Digital sampling — a defining feature of much early rap and hip hop — is now much more tightly controlled in the music industry and by the courts, yet on the margins it thrives. What does the future hold? The gatekeeper function of the large record labels is under attack, yet so far it dominates the commercial marketplace. Young artists look to the web for alternative distribution mechanisms and find a bewildering set of legal rules, many designed for very different technologies and industry structures.”

Het is overigens niet de eerste keer dat Boyle besloot deze uitingsvorm te gebruiken. Speciaal voor documentaire- en filmmakers maakte hij eerder ook een comic.
