Met Songwriter Service heeft muziekdistributeur Tunecore een dienst ontwikkeld die geld, dat aan de strijkstok van de major labels blijft hangen, terugbrengt bij de enige die er recht op heeft: de maker. In onderstaande video legt directeur Jeff Price één en ander uit.

In één woord geweldig, de hack van drie medewerkers van het Free Music Archive (FMA): Free Music Archive Radio. Zij vonden namelijk een oplossing voor een veel voorkomend probleem van horeca-eigenaren, remixers en soundtrackmakers:
welk materiaal is op welke wijze auteursrechtelijk beschermd en hoe kom ik daar zo snel mogelijk achter?
Of in hun eigen woorden:
Need to play music in your store or restaurant without having to deal with blanket licenses? Need music for your independent media project? Songs for a remix? This Radio/Playlist application allows the user to select an artist, Creative Commons license, Mood, and Style to create a list of similar artists that meet your needs.”
Gebruikmakend van de api’s van The Echo Nest (playlisting) en het FMA (music archive) maakten zij een webapp, waarbij je kan zoeken op een bepaalde artiest en vervolgens kan aangeven aan welke karakteristieken het materiaal moet voldoen. Omdat het afkomstig is uit de database va het Free Music Archive, is het beschikbaar onder één van de Creative Commons-licenties, of de licentie van het FMA zelf. De hergebruiksnuances zijn namelijk per licentie bepaald. Het resultaat wordt getoond als een playlist met direct beluisterbare en downloadable tracks.
Hieronder een voorbeeld waarbij ik zocht op Jimi Hendrix, met als specifieke wens dat de stijl adult contemporary was, de sfeer hypnotic en alle mogelijke licenties mogelijk waren.

Afgezien van een uitstekend artikel in de San Francisco Chronicle besteed de mainstream media uitermate weinig aandacht aan pogingen van het Amerikaanse Congres vergaande anti-piraterijwetgeving te realiseren. Eerder besteedde ik aandacht aan Protect IP, product van de Senaat. Het Huis van Afgevaardigden werkt tegelijkertijd aan een nog verdergaander voorstel: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act. Hoe het werkt (bron: Business Insider):
Right now, under the DMCA, a copyright holder can request a website remove material he or she owns. If the website refuses, the matter can go to court.
SOPA gets around this by allowing the third party to go directly to advertisers, credit card companies, and ISPs to effectively shut down a website’s lifeline when it’s suspected of posting copyrighted material. There’s no need to go to court either.For example, under SOPA, a copyright holder can go directly to Google and ask them to block all Google ads from a website that is suspected of carrying copyrighted works. If it’s a commercial site, credit card companies and services like PayPal have the right to block all payments.It’s a classic “shoot first, ask questions later” move, and has the potential to be harmful to sites and services such as Dropbox that depend on user uploaded content.
Some other alarming bullet points from SOPA:
- Search engines can be required to block accused websites from results.
- Internet service providers can be required to block accused websites from their customers.
- Payment companies don’t need a request from a copyright holder to block a website. Instead, they can do so on their own if the suspect a website may be posting copyrighted work without permission.

Voor the time being bestaat er echter gerede kans dat het wetsvoorstel wordt aangenomen. Daartoe zal ontegenzeggelijk bijdragen dat de mainstream pers er zogezegd weinig aandacht aan besteedt. Techdirt maakt dit treffend duidelijk door twee queries met Justin Bieber (een verklaard voorstander van het voorstel) met elkaar te vergelijken. Het resultaat is helder: Bieber’s mogelijke nageslacht loopt rondjes om een wet die de fundamenten van het web aantast.
Sterker nog: zonder dat web zou de wereld waarschijnlijk nooit van hem gehoord hebben. Een site als Youtube, platform bij uitstek voor de zanger, zou namelijk hoogstwaarschijnlijk niet de kans hebben gekregen zich te ontwikkelen tot wat het nu is. Maar het is anders gelopen en daarbij nemen we het bestaan van Justin Bieber en zijn nageslacht maar voor lief, niet?
