Mash-up Daft Punk ontleed in web app

Anatomy of a Mashup is een erg mooi project van ontwikkelaar Cameron Adams. Hij maakte een mashup van de discografie van Daft Punk en legde dat proces vast in een web app. Op zijn blog legt hij uit:

In order to explain the layering and interplay that goes into something like a Girl Talk album or The 139 Mix Tape, I decided to take my own mashup of Daft Punk’s discography — Definitive Daft Punk — and reveal its entire structure: the cutting, layering, levels and equalisation of 23 different songs. By dividing up the sound data for each song and computing its appearance in real time, the resulting visualization gives you an understanding of the unique anatomy of this particular mash-up.”

Yale opent historische beeldendatabank

De Universiteit van Yale stelt haar gedigitaliseerde beeldarchieven open voor het publiek. Dat betekent dat er ook veel muziekgerelateerd materiaal vrijelijk beschikbaar komt, zoals bijvoorbeeld bovenstaand schilderij van Johan Joseph Zoffany (1733-1810), getiteld The Gore Family with George, 3rd Earl Cowper. Over de achtergronden van deze stap:

As works in these collections become digitized, the museums and libraries will make those images that are in the public domain freely accessible. In a departure from established convention, no license will be required for the transmission of the images and no limitations will be imposed on their use. The result is that scholars, artists, students, and citizens the world over will be able to use these collections for study, publication, teaching and inspiration. […]

The Yale treasures that are now accessible under the new policy are as wide-ranging as the collections themselves and include such diverse items as a small limestone stela with hieroglyphic inscription from the Peabody Museum of Natural History, a Mozart sonata in the composer’s own hand from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, a 15th-century Javanese gold kris handle from the Indo-Pacific collection of Yale University Art Gallery and a watercolor by William Blake from the collection of prints and drawings in the Yale Center for British Art.”

Lastgraph visualiseert een jaar lang luisteren

Een klein jaar geleden schreef ik een berichtje over Lastgraph. Dit gereedschap visualiseert alle muziek die middels Last FM’s scrobblefuntionaliteit wordt verzameld. In mijn geval is dat zo’n beetje alles wat ik consumeer, want zowel iTunes, Spotify en mobiele telefoon verzamelen deze trackinformatie. Een jaartje luistergeschiedenis terugkijken zal voor iedereen specifieke ervaringen en herinneringen oproepen, of tot bepaalde inzichten leiden. Zo vind ik het in mijn geval bijvoorbeeld opvallend dat ik, evenals vorig jaar, in de eerste week van januari nauwelijks naar muziek luister. Misschien dat uitluiden met Slayer het muziekjaar zodanig afsluit dat een adempauze op z’n plaats is? Zou best kunnen. Verder lijkt het alsof ik over de gehele linie iets minder muziek beluister. Ik ervaar dit echter niet zo, maar dat neemt niet weg dat het een verkeerde ontwikkeling is. Ik beloof beterschap.

Internet Archive opent haar echte deuren

Eén van de meest voorname digitale bastionnen, het Internet Archive, opent op 5 juni a.s. haar echte deuren voor het publiek. In de vestiging in Richmond, Florida, worden in eerste instantie 300.000 fysieke titels ondergebracht, maar het archief is klaar om ettelijke miljoenen exemplaren boeken, films en vinyl op een veilige en duurzame manier te bewaren.

Auteursrechtlobby voert druk op Europa op

Aan Acta zijn hier al verscheidene posts gewijd, maar het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik er aandacht aan besteedde. Totdat ik zojuist het artikel Leaked “ACTA” Lobby Letter Reveals Hollywood Pressure On EU op Torrentfreak las. De zelfingenomenheid van de entertainmentindustrie, die in de daarin aangehaalde en tevens hieronder te lezen uitgelekte brief naar voren komt, is rondweg stuitend. De vraag is eenvoudigweg of Europa alle voor de hand ligende juridische stappen opzij zet, want het duurt de lobby te lang voordat de kogel door de kerk is:

While we welcome the prerogatives in IP and trade matters conferred to the European Parliament under the new Treaty, we are concerned that the procedure of seeking an Opinion from the ECJ will substantially delay the final adoption and implementation of ACTA and weaken the position of the EU vis-à-vis its international trading partners as a leader in proposing and supporting effective enforcement of intellectual property rights globally. […] Given the Parliament’s signal that it supports strong enforcement of IP provisions in the EU’s trade agreements, we hope that the European Parliament will give its consent to ACTA with no further delays.”

Ik hoop dat de Europese politiek net zo lang blijft talmen als nodig is en zich niet laat leiden door dit soort gedrag. Vrijheid van het internet en informatie is belangrijker dan commerciële belangen van een sector die leeft in het verleden.
