Auteursrechtlobby voert druk op Europa op
Aan Acta zijn hier al verscheidene posts gewijd, maar het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat ik er aandacht aan besteedde. Totdat ik zojuist het artikel Leaked “ACTA” Lobby Letter Reveals Hollywood Pressure On EU op Torrentfreak las. De zelfingenomenheid van de entertainmentindustrie, die in de daarin aangehaalde en tevens hieronder te lezen uitgelekte brief naar voren komt, is rondweg stuitend. De vraag is eenvoudigweg of Europa alle voor de hand ligende juridische stappen opzij zet, want het duurt de lobby te lang voordat de kogel door de kerk is:
While we welcome the prerogatives in IP and trade matters conferred to the European Parliament under the new Treaty, we are concerned that the procedure of seeking an Opinion from the ECJ will substantially delay the final adoption and implementation of ACTA and weaken the position of the EU vis-à-vis its international trading partners as a leader in proposing and supporting effective enforcement of intellectual property rights globally. […] Given the Parliament’s signal that it supports strong enforcement of IP provisions in the EU’s trade agreements, we hope that the European Parliament will give its consent to ACTA with no further delays.”
Ik hoop dat de Europese politiek net zo lang blijft talmen als nodig is en zich niet laat leiden door dit soort gedrag. Vrijheid van het internet en informatie is belangrijker dan commerciële belangen van een sector die leeft in het verleden.
