De maker ervan, Manuel Palou, is tevens mede-oprichter van de galerie (ART 404) waar het werk tentoongesteld staat.

De jonge Britse kunstenares Katie Paterson (onder andere genoemd in het Observer-artikel Meet the best new artists in Britain) maakte het werk Langjökull, Snæfellsjökull, Solheimajökull (Three glacier ice records, played until they melt). Ik wordt altijd blij van dit soort projecten!
Sound recordings from three glaciers in Iceland, pressed into three records, cast, and frozen with the meltwater from each of these glaciers, and played on three turntables until they completely melt. The records were played once and now exist as three digital films. The turntables begin playing together, and for the first ten minutes as the needles trace their way around, the sounds from each glacier merge in and out with the sounds the ice itself creates. The needle catches on the last loop, and the records play for nearly two hours, until completely melted.”

Read More… wat oude platenspelers, een stapeltje (kapot) vinyl, een mengmaneeltje, al mijn luidsprekers en ook die van de buren en overburen en om het aan elkaar vast te knopen heel veel kabeltjes. Het is toch grappig hoe dingen soms lopen. Vanmiddag legde ik de laatste hand aan een boekbespreking van Acquisitions In The New Information Universe, Core competencies and ethical practices voor de aankomende editie van Digitale Bibliotheek. Auteur Jesse Holden stelt hierin dat het collectiebeleid van bibliotheken een rhizomatische benadering vereist: het netwerkdenken. De term rhizomatisch bracht me ertoe de kunst- en technologiesite Rhizome.org na zeer lange tijd weer eens te bezoeken. En dat werd beloond, want het bracht me vanavond op het pad van de Poolse animitor en filmer Piotr Kamler. Op de site zelf is een aantal video’s van hem te bekijken en ook te beluisteren, want de soundtracks zijn van de hand van niemand minder dan Bernard Parmegiani. Het onderstaande L’Araignéléphant (1968) vind ik erg aardig:
Het bleek na een korte webzoektocht echter dat ook Ubuweb mooi materiaal van Kamler beschikbaar heeft gemaakt. Ik kan zeker aanraden zijn science fiction-film Chronopolis te bekijken. De soundtrack hierbij is trouwens niet van Parmegiani, maar van Luc Ferrari. Ook niet misselijk trouwens. Ik heb voor de gelegenheid ook maar een afspeellijst van beide heren in Spotify gemaakt.
