The Noun Project – vrije symbolen
Wederom dient zich een succesvol Kickstarterproject aan: The Noun Project. Doelstelling is het verzamelen, catalogiseren en contextualiseren van symbolen. Deze worden vervolgens onder een Creative Commons-licentie beschikbaar gesteld. Waarom?:
Though many of the popular symbols – from No Parking to Trash to the familiar directional arrows – were designed by the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1974 with the explicit intention of being in the public domain, finding free, high-quality versions of them online is still a pain. Each symbol on The Noun Project, by contrast, is downloadable as an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file, the most flexible open-standard format available.
Het project heeft inmiddels ruimschoots aan haar financiële doelstelling voldaan: ingezet was op $ 1.500, gerealiseerd werd ruim $ 14.000. Met dat geld wordt de catalogus onder andere ingedeeld in bruikbare categorieën als transport, webapps, routering en communicatie. Daarnaast worden er ontwerpcompetities voor nieuwe onderdelen opgezet. Daarbij kan worden gedacht aan glutenvrij voedsel of internetconnectiviteit. Crowdsourcing in optima forma dus.
