Gemashupte open source muziekinstrumenten

In het artikel Zoybar: Open-Source Music Hardware Architecture wordt aandacht besteed aan een open ontwikkelgemeenschap Zoybar. Deze groep richt zich volledig op de hardwarekant van muziekinstrumenten. Met behulp van een modulaire hardwarekit kunnen verschillende instrumenten gemashupt worden en vanzelfsprekend kunnen eigen inventies worden verwerkt. Geheel in de open source-traditie wordt dit gedocumenteerd aan de gemeenschap ’teruggegeven’.

Zoybar is an open R&D Lab for academic, hobbyist, and commercial developers to easily create music instruments and applications. Zoybar`s unique open R&D model provides access to both hardware and production files for further customizations and development by the end users themselves. Zoybar is a new form of expression of knowledge and information.

Cilinderopname van keuvelende Tsjaikovski (1890)

Toegegeven, als je niet weet dat het Tsjaikovski is die je in onderstaande cilinderopname uit 1890 hoort keuvelen met een aantal collega’s is het de aandacht nauwelijks waard. Maar het is hem echt en dat is de reden dat Open Culture deze opname een plaats gaf in hun overzicht 45 Great Cultural Icons. Over de opname:

This Edison phonograph cylinder recording from 1890 was made by Julius Block, a Russian Businessman of German descent (The Old Man with the Umbrella in this video) who became fascinated with the phonograph (and even convinced Tchaikovsky to sign an endorsement). The recording was re-discovered in the Pushkin archive of St.Petersburg, Russia in 1997, and was labelled with the names of the participants: Anton Rubinstein (composer), Elizaveta Lavrovskaya (singer), Peter Tchaikovsky (composer), Vassily Safonov (pianist and conductor), Alexandra Hubert (pianist), Julius Block (the host himself). One can imagine the scene – a group of eminent musicians each standing around this new ‘wonderful invention’, being gently encouraged to say something. So there are a few words of banter, some musical scales, whistles, etc., much of which is only just audible.

E. Lawrowskaja: A disgusting…how he dares slyly to name me.

W. Safonov : (Sings a scale incorrectly).

P. Tchaikovsky: This trill could be better.

P. Tchaikovsky: Block is good, but Edison is even better.

E. Lawrowskaja: (sings) A-o, a-o.

W. Safonow: (In German) Peter Jurgenson in Moskau.

Media kritisch en vrij bekeken op Critical Commons

Gisteren kwam ik voor het eerst in aanraking met Critical Commons. Op deze geweldige website wordt auteursrechtelijk beschermd materiaal aangeboden dat is voorzien van wetenschappenlijk commentaar. Op deze manier krijgt het werk een fair use-status en kan het vrijelijk worden gebruikt door geïnteresseerden. Hiermee verschilt het bijvoorbeeld van Youtube. Alhoewel bij beide sites de gebruikers verantwoordelijk zijn voor wat ze uploaden wordt bij Critical Commons alleen materiaal geplaatst dat is gecontextualiseerd of een andere betekenis gekregen heeft.

De welbekende Untergangparodieën werden dit jaar onderdeel van de fair use-discussie, omdat rechthebbende Constantin Films de filmpjes offline dwong. Critical Commons heeft, om haar doelstelling kracht bij te zetten, juist een Untergangparodie gebruikt om aandacht te vragen. Initiator Steve Anderzon zegt hierover:

The video is also promoting the fair use advocacy site Critical Commons, which is a fair use advocacy and media sharing site, funded by the MacArthur Foundation. This is currently the most radical media-sharing site on the open internet. Designed for media educators and students, Critical Commons makes high-quality, copyrighted media publicly available by placing it in a critical context and informing users about their rights under fair use.”

Critical Commons maakt voor de techniek gebruik van het open source videosharingplatform Plumi, gebaseerd op het CMS Plone:

Plumi enables you to create your own sophisticated video sharing site; by adding it to an existing Plone instance you can quickly have a wide array of functionality to facilitate video distribution and community creation. […] There are few FOSS CMS options that allow you to create your own video sharing website; almost all mainstream video sharing sites keep their distribution platform under lock and key.”

Rechtenprofessoren doen beroep op Obama: maak ACTA transparant

Een indrukwekkende groep van juristen en rechtenprofessoren heeft een open brief aan Barack Obama geschreven met daarin een heldere boodschap: teken de huidige ACTA-tekst niet vóórdat hierover een openbaar debat plaatsgevonden heeft. De Verenigde Staten worden tijdens de onderhandelingen vertegenwoordigd door de United States Trade Office (USTR). Deze belangenbehartiger heeft er veel moeite in gestoken dit proces geen onderdeel te laten uitmaken van het publieke debat. In de open brief wordt deze houding, evenals gedane beloften, met de grond gelijkgemaakt:

The USTR has insisted that ACTA’s provisions are merely procedural and only about enforcing existing rights. These assertions are simply false. Nearly 100 international intellectual property experts from six continents gathered in Washington, DC in June, 2010 to analyze the potential public interest impacts of the officially released text. Those experts – joined by over 650 other experts and organizations – found that “the terms of the publicly released draft of ACTA threaten numerous public interests, including every concern specifically disclaimed by negotiators.” The expert statement notes that:

  • Negotiators claim ACTA will not interfere with citizens’ fundamental rights and liberties; it will.[8]
  • They claim ACTA is consistent with the WTO Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS); it is not.[9]
  • They claim ACTA will not increase border searches or interfere with cross-border transit of legitimate generic medicines; it will.[10]
  • And they claim that ACTA does not require “graduated response” disconnections of people from the internet; however, the agreement encourages such policies.[11]
