Avant Garde Project: ‘verdwenen’ opnamen eigentijds klassieke muziek ontsloten

Onder meer via The Pirate Bay worden al jarenlang torrents onder de noemer AGP aangeboden. AGP – Avant Garde Project – is een verzameling opnames van eigentijds klassieke muziek die niet- of erg moeilijk vindbaar zijn. De verspreide torrentbestanden zijn opnames van LP’s en worden als FLAC beschikbaar gesteld.

De AGP-catalogus omvat ruim 200 componisten, uiteenlopend van Arnold Schönberg en Alban Berg tot compilaties van Europese en Amerikaanse elektronische muziek. Downloaden hoeft overigens niet per sé: Ubuweb biedt de mogelijkheid tot streaming luisteren, zij het in een mindere geluidskwaliteit.

Men gaat overigens zeer gedegen om met het verwijderen van materiaal dat tóch officieel uitgebracht wordt. Inzake de torrent met historische opnames uit de elektronische muziekstudio’s van Columbia-Princeton wordt bijvoorbeeld vermeld:

“NOTE: Tracks 15-18 and 22 in this installment have been deleted because New World Records is in the process of re-issuing as print-on-demand CD-Rs all of the recordings released originally on CRI LPs. If the recordings in those tracks are not already available commercially, they should be in the near future. Click here for more details.”

Traditionele drukpers ontmoet 3D printing

Printen van een nieuw lettertype om de drukpers naar de 21e eeuw te brengen. Dat was de drijfveer achter het project A23D, een idee van drukker Richard Ardagh. Het font werd ontworpen door Scott Williams en Henrik Kubel van A2-Type en geprint door Chalk Studios. Het project werd mogelijk gemaakt door een bijdrage van de Arts Council. Kubel:

“It was important for us to acknowledge the 3D printing aspect in an appropriate and meaningful way, to see how far we could push the limits of this production process – and also to utilise the technology in a way that has not been done with wood type before.”

In de korte film die van het proces werd gemaakt is te zien dat ze daarin uitstekend geslaagd zijn. Mooi project.

Te gek! Grooves die je zelf letterlijk ‘neerlegt’ door blokjes op een draaitafel te plaatsen. Lay down that groove!

“Beat Blox is a graduation project by Per Holmquist from Beckmans College of Design in Sweden. The project includes a music machine which allows anyone to create and experiment with music, in a playful and tangible way. The installation includes three turntables, all with built in Arduino, midishield and a total of 15 digital distance sensors. As the user adds a block to the deck, the distance sensor plays a sound. Combining all three turntables produces some quite intricate and fun beats.”

Lekker: LP’s van chocola

Het is zeker niet nieuw, het maken van chocolade-LP’s. Dat gebeurde al in het begin van de vorige eeuw. Het zien en horen komt nu met Youtube echter wel heel erg dichtbij. Het geluidsresultaat is verbazingwekkend goed moet ik zeggen. En opeten na een beperkt aantal draaibeurten, of gewoon omdat het een slechte plaat is. Mooi.

Het bedrijfsliedboek van IBM (1937)

Thomas Watson Jr., oprichter van IBM, bedacht in 1927 dat het wel aardig zou zijn een liedboek te hebben waarin zijn bedrijf, maar voornamelijk hemzelf alle lof werd toegezongen. Hieronder de editie uit 1937.

The 1937 edition of the songbook is a 54-page monument to glassey-eyed corporate inhumanity, with every page overflowing with trite praise to The Company and Its Men. The booklet reads like a terribly parody of a hymnal—one that praises not the traditional Christian trinity but the new corporate triumvirate of IBM the father, Watson the son, and American entrepreneurship as the holy spirit.

Een treffend voorbeeld daarvan is “To Thomas J. Watson, President, I.B.M. Our Inspiration:”

“Thomas Watson is our inspiration,
Head and soul of our splendid I.B.M.
We are pledged to him in every nation,
Our President and most beloved man.
His wisdom has guided each division
In service to all humanity
We have grown and broadened with his vision,
None can match him or our great company.
T. J. Watson, we all honor you,
You’re so big and so square and so true,
We will follow and serve with you forever,
All the world must know what I. B. M. can do.”

Om het meezingen te vereenvoudigen werden (tenenkrommende) teksten als hierboven gezet op bekende Amerikaanse liedjes, bijvoorbeeld Columbia, Gem of the Ocean.

Hard Copy: fashion met 3D geprinte onderdelen

Ontwerpster Noa Raviv maakte Hard Copy, een modecollectie bestaande uit traditionele- en 3D geprinte elementen. Ze studeerde ermee af aan het Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Israel).

“Each item is a true representation of an alternate reality presented within the confines of screens. For example, the grid is a tool used within programs such as Rhinoceros, AutoCAD, and Illustrator in order to grant designers the ability to understand size, scale, and proportion.”
