Ongebruikte piano krijgt boekenkastbestemming

Ongebruikte piano krijgt boekenkastbestemming

Entero, een producent van op maat gemaakt meubilair, vormde deze piano om tot een boekenkast (maar heeft ook een salontafel in het assortiment).

This is the last piano from the first half of last century built in Riga Pianofactory. The piano is coated with cherry wood veneer. The body of this piano was damaged, also the key’s were broken.

As work progresses, the strings and hammers where removed from the body. The body was made deeper that we could build there bookshelf. The keypad was restored. Piano lacquer casing was removed, damaged veneer patterns where repaired and to the edges we made new moldings from mahogany and we lacquered it with glossy varnish. The bookshelf was made from mahogany veneer, and the contents were prepared with matt lacquer.

Ontwerper Ted Reichenbach:

I wanted something better. The classic paper stripe as a bookmark has always been a temporary solution for me. Because i like to leave my books open I got the idea of a whole new concept.

I wanted something better. Something, whose shape is similar to the shape of the opened book, like a negative to the positive” and prevents it from damages. With that the idea of book hook was born. With my first sketches I let it produce as a prototype. After more improvement with regard to the material, angle and edge devolution was a marketable product of high-quality produced.

The book hook is an innovative bookmark, a practical storing place and a beautiful design object at once. I am sure that especially readers will like my book hook and it will be a welcome gift idea for every occasion.”

Booken geeft boeken extra functionaliteit

Booken geeft boeken extra functionaliteit

Is het een boekenkast? Is het een leestafel? Booken van ontwerpstudio Raw Edges is beide. Briljant in zijn eenvoud.

On the occasion of the 2013 edition of IMM Cologne, Italian furniture manufacturer Lema presents the new Booken bookcase, designed by design studio Raw Edges in their first collaboration with the brand.

Booken reinvents the idea of a bookcase in a unique, unexpected way, taking into account the evolution of the book in the last years, from physical artifact to e-book. Raw Edges worked on the idea of the book as an object that becomes usable material, transforming and reinventing its function, creating a multifunctional object that serves simultaneously as a side table, shelf and bookcase.

Inspired by the idea that people don’t usually re-read the novels they have on their shelves, Raw Edges sought to use books as a support surface. “Obviously they can always be used and read, but simultaneously they assume a new function,” Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay point out. A light wooden structure allows all books to be hanged, transforming the bookcase from a vertical element into a horizontal one.

After all, a super high-tech library with robot librarians and an open floor plan that allows food and talking is cool, but it doesn’t give us the same kind of thirst for learning that stacks of leathery brown books and dusty arches do. […] These “developments signal a change in expectations. Rather than quiet places of study, surrounded by rows and rows of books, the library of the future houses books in closed stacks and tends to be a place where ideas are conceived and shared, becoming much more like a laboratory, where inspiration arrives as much from discussion as words written on paper.” Which could be great or terrible, depending on your learning style. What do you think, dear readers?
