WikiRebels en de beklemmende waarheid

Af en toe liepen bij het bekijken van WikiRebels me de rillingen over de rug. In de afgelopen tijd zijn er allerlei stellingen over de site geponeerd, maar van alle voors en tegens vond ik die van Karin Spaink nog het treffendst:

“Toen Salman Rushdie zijn leven niet meer zeker was omdat hij gebruikmaakte van zijn recht op vrije meningsuiting en een aantal moslimfundi’s daar niet tegen kon, schaarde heel het westen zich beschermend om Rushdie heen. Nu wordt het leven van Julian Assange bedreigd, door onze eigen politici nota bene. En niet eens om wat hij heeft gezegd – nee, omdat hij ons laat lezen wat zij zeggen en doen.

Met haar woorden in het achterhoofd komen de beelden van de beschietingen van burgers in Baghdad (12 juli 2007), beter bekend als Collateral Murder, nogmaals keihard binnen. De klanken van Barber’s Adagio dragen daaraan ontegenzegenlijk bij, maar zijn allerminst effectbejag. De waarheid is af en toe gewoon verschrikkelijk en WikiLeaks toont die. Elke politicus die probeert Assange en zijn mensen (of vergelijkbare initiatieven als OpenLeaks) de zwarte piet toe te spelen doet voor mij daarom af.

Kopiëren en creativiteit

Kopiëren, creativiteit en de vraag over de waarde, danwel het bestaan van originaliteit, komen aan de orde in een podcast genaamd Where We Live: Copying and Creativity. Aan het woord komen Marcus Boon (auteur van het boek In Praise Of Copying), DJ Spooky en rechtenprofessor Susan Scafidi. Beluister de podcast hieronder:

In het aanbevolen artikel wordt naast de bekende Picasso-quote “Good artists copy; great artists steal“, ook een uitspraak van T.S. Eliott aangehaald:

Poets and authors can use other people’s writings as a base for their works as long as the reuse takes the work to a new place, and introduces it to a new audience.”

En aangezien van tijd tot tijd een waarheid als een koe nooit verkeerd is kan ie maar beter komen van een vermaard auteur.

Christian Marclay – Record Player (2000)

De onbetwiste koning van de analoge mashup is, naast John Oswald, toch wel Christian Marclay. De resultaten van zijn vinylexperimenten zijn zowel auditief als tastbaar, speels als rauw. Onderstaande documentaire Record Player (zowel in letterlijke als figuurlijke zin) geeft een mooie inkijk in zijn manier van werken.

Marclay’s work explores connections between sound, noise, photography, video, and film. A pioneer of using gramaphone records and turntables as musical instruments to create sound collage, Marclay is, in the words of critic Thom Jurek, perhaps the “unwitting inventor of turntablism.” His own use of turntables and records, beginning in the mid-1970s, was developed independently of but roughly parallel to hip hop’s use of the instrument.”

Pogo doet het nu met een kleine prinses

Pogo (Nick Bertke) maakte in dit geval gebruik van beeld en geluid van de film A Little Princess en ik neem wederom m’n pet af voor zoveel creatieve monnikenarbeid.

Whisperlude is my remix of A Little Princess, comprising harp sections, sound effects and vocal syllables recorded from the film. There are well over 100 different sounds in total, and it was quite a challenge when sequencing and mastering to keep it all sounding neat and coherent.

In editing the video for Whisperlude, I wanted to bring into fruition emotional experiences I’ve had over the past year by juxtaposing shots of sadness and happiness. The result is a video that isn’t as cheerful as most of my works, but one that I’m able to connect to on an emotional level very well.

Whisperlude marks the first of my videos to feature any kind of visual effects, and don’t be surprised if it’s the last. While the fruits of my labour are satisfying, it’s difficult for me to justify them delaying the release of a track this much. The rotoscoping and tracking involved had me go without sleep for several days, as if levelling each shot isn’t tedious enough with each video I produce. Nevertheless, I’m very happy with the results, and I don’t think such a rapid succession of shots could have worked any other way.

As always, picking a name took some time. I eventually narrowed my choices down to Whisperlude and Saratone (Sara being the main character of the film). I just happened to be speaking with YouTube wunderkind HomeStarRunnerTron before posting the video, who was kind enough to ask his family for a second opinion. With their help, I uploaded this track immediately with a title I think suits it well! My heart goes out to Skye and his family for always being such beautiful people.
