Op 11 februari strijdt het internet tegen massaspionage #thedaywefightback

De gewonnen strijd tegen SOPA en PIPA was een prachtig en veelbetekenend voorbeeld van de gezamenlijke macht van kritische internetgebruikers. Die energie wordt nu door een aantal organisaties (waaronder bijvoorbeeld de Electronic Frontier Foundation, Boing Boing en Mozilla) opnieuw aangesproken, maar nu als antwoord op massaspionage. 11 Februari wordt daarom uitgroepen tot The Day We Fight Back, een dag die dezelfde impact moet hebben als de SOPA Blackout Day. Het prijzenswaardige initiatief is tegelijkertijd een gebaar ter nagedachtenis van Aaron Swartz, één van de meest prominente vertegenwoordigers van de destijds gewonnen strijd tegen SOPA en PIPA.

De oproep luidt:

DEAR USERS OF THE INTERNET,

In January 2012 we defeated the SOPA and PIPA censorship legislation with the largest Internet protest in history. A year ago this month one of that movement’s leaders, Aaron Swartz, tragically passed away.

Today we face a different threat, one that undermines the Internet, and the notion that any of us live in a genuinely free society: mass surveillance.

If Aaron were alive, he’d be on the front lines, fighting against a world in which governments observe, collect, and analyze our every digital action.

Now, on the eve of the anniversary of Aaron’s passing, and in celebration of the win against SOPA and PIPA that he helped make possible, we are announcing a day of protest against mass surveillance, to take place this February 11th.

Allerminst verwonderlijk, maar toch: met bijdragen van onder andere Lawrence Lessig, Cory Doctorow en Mike Masnick leest Hacking Politics, over de succesvolle volksoproer tegen SOPA en PIPA, als een who’s who in internetactivisme.

Auteursrechtbeschermers te koop?

Is beleid te koop? Hierboven een foto van staatssecretaris Fred Teeven met MPAA-voorzitter Chris Dodd. Laatstgenoemde, een voormalig senator, wordt in de video in deze blogpost op de hak genomen. Een filmpje vol knipogen, maar wel met een serieuze ondertoon. De link naar bijvoorbeeld de door de VS gewenste uitlevering van Richard O’Dwyer is overduidelijk. De video is gemaakt door een groep die zichzelf Political Prostitution noemt en op haar website zegt:

The U.S. government has given itself unchallenged power to shut down or block access to websites, and search engines with virtually no oversight. The failed SOPA bill attempted to limit the online freedoms of individuals and small business ventures while protecting the interests of the Motion Picture Association of America, U.S. politicians and major advertisers. Even without SOPA, the U.S. Government is making a major push to enforce its laws abroad with complete disregard for sovereignty of other nations in order to extradite so-called “criminals” to the US where they will be tried for their “crimes” in American court.”

Lessig roept op tot bewustwording

In een interview op Mashable, SOPA 2.0: Why the Fight for Internet Freedom Is Far From Over, wordt Lawrence Lessig een aantal vragen inzake SOPA en het vervolg ervan voorgelegd. De boodschap van Lessig is helder: deze strijd is gewonnen, maar de oorlog niet. Om te voorkomen dat SOPA-gerelateerde wetgeving in de toekomst toch gerealiseerd wordt is volgens hem georganiseerd maatschappelijk protest noodzakelijk. Maar daarvoor is goede voorlichting noodzakelijk. Onderstaande vraag en dito antwoord uit het interview vond ik daarom het meest illustratief

Children are growing up online, but with little knowledge of the Internet’s open-source origins. Does that give the “powers that be,” so to speak, the opportunity to reinvent the Internet as a more restricted environment?

Yeah, I do. I think as people experience code-based control of sites like the iTunes Music Store or Facebook and begin to take for granted the way these controls work, they think less about how things could be different.

We need to fight against this lack of awareness. Inside these entities — like Facebook — there have to be much stronger organizational methods [that let] people push this idea. These systems that are controlling behavior have been baked into the tech, and they could be baked differently.

I think the resistance to this will continue to be grassroots — organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have been great in facilitating that.”

Terugblikkend op LibCamp en één van de sessies die ik daar bijwoonde, Bibliotheken en het maatschappelijk debat, ligt hier een uitgelezen mogelijkheid voor bibliotheken om een rol te spelen. Maar daarvoor dient eerst het debat bínnen onze instellingen op gang te komen en daaraan schort het schromelijk. Dat was in ieder geval de conclusie van voornoemde sessie. Hoopgevend in dat geval is de positieve respons op OpenBibliotheken.nl. Als we daarmee in ieder geval de discussie omtrent netneutraliteit en auteursrechten binnen bibliotheken wat op gang kunnen brengen is een deel van onze missie bereikt.
