Boeken van vlees en bloed
Isaak attendeerde me vanmiddag op het Human Library Project van de Toronto Public Library. Het idee is het ‘lenen’ van een persoon en hiermee een gesprek aan te gaan. Communicatiemanager Anne Marie Aikins stelt:
With the Human Library, it’s a one-on-one experience and that kind of storytelling, from person to person, does harken back to centuries and centuries ago when a story was the only way to learn. […] It’s an old technology.”
Het initiatief, dat begin november zo’n 200 bezoekers trok die uiteenlopende personen leenden, beantwoordt aan de groeiende behoefte aan persoonlijk contact. Daarbij speelt het internet overigens nog steeds een voorname rol:
In our feedback from the Human Library event, we found that a good portion of users heard about it from social media. In the least personal, most mediated way, they found a way to have a very personal experience.”

Het is misschien niet de meest flitsende TED-lezing, maar het verhaal van Denis Dutton, A Darwinian theory of beauty staat, mede door de animatie, als een huis. Het meest vermakelijk is z’n uitspraak “Why don’t you come up to my cave, so I can show you my hand axes“, maar dat doet wellicht wat af aan de essentie:
So the next time you pass a jewelry shop window displaying a beautifully cut teardrop-shaped stone, don’t be so sure it’s just your culture telling you that that sparkling jewel is beautiful. Your distant ancestors loved that shape and found beauty in the skill needed to make it, even before they could put their love into words. Is beauty in the eye of the beholder? No, it’s deep in our minds. It’s a gift, handed down from the intelligent skills and rich emotional lives of our most ancient ancestors. Our powerful reaction to images to the expression of emotion in art to the beauty of music to the night sky will be with us and our dscendants for as long as the human race exists.”
Open Culture besteedde hernieuwde aandacht aan de presentatie, omdat Dutton gisteren overleed.

Typographic Calendar: creatief met data
Heel erg handig is de Typographic Calender van Harald Geisler niet, maar dat is ook niet het doel:
The Typographic Calendar makes finding dates and marking events a creative process. Every month is followed by a large backspace key, that helps scanning the grid for a specific date. The resulting, huge image (70x100cm) looks beautiful on the wall.”

Pogo doet ’t ook in het echt
Nick Bertke (Pogo) is hier al een aantal keer voorbijgekomen, maar dat is omdat ik zijn mash-ups gewoonweg ontzettend waardeer. Wat ik niet wist is dat hij zijn intrigerende samplekunstwerkjes ook live etaleert. Over zijn instrumentarium zegt hij:
It all fits into one bag! I just can’t tell you how important it is to simplify a mission-critical system like this. Every component is a potential bomb just waiting to go off and destroy everyone’s night. The less components the better, and the easier it is to get in and out of the venue. I remember lugging my entire studio machine to an event once – naturally everything failed, and I almost threw my back out trying to get everything back in the car. It was a good thing nobody knew I’d be on that night.”
Helaas heb ik geen liveopnames van Bertke in m’n bezit, dus daarom onderstaand maar weer een stukje ouderwetse Pogohuisvlijt, getiteld Upular. Is ook leuk!
