Spelen met modeltreintjes gecombineerd met nieuwe technologie, samengebracht in een oude koffer. Mooi toch?

This is my N-Scale train in a phonograph box. It runs on an Arduino and Motor shield. I put a reed sensor on the tracks, and glued a small magnet underneath the locomotive. When the train passes the over pass, the tin-can bridge closes, the locomotive slows down to a stop and whistles. The train whistle plays from a Radio Shack recorder module. The speaker is hidden inside the overpass. It creates an awesome illusion that the train is actually playing the whistle sound! I put a relay in place of the play button. The recorder is powered through the motor shield. After the train whistles, the two light posts light up in a series of patterns. the tin-can slowly opens and the school rings rings. The train begins again passing through until it reaches the reed sensor and it repeats all over. The red button can be pressed at anytime to activate the whistle.

I’ve created a technique for converting digital audio files into 3D printable 33rpm records and printed some functional prototypes over the weekend. These records play on regular turntables, with regular needles, at regular speeds, just like any vinyl record. The audio on the records is very low resolution (as you can hear), it has a sampling rate of 11kHz (a quarter of typical mp3 audio) and 5-6bit resolution (mp3 audio is 16 bit). #DELETE CONTROL: online instrumenten tegen censuur

Ontwikkelingsorganisatie Hivos is een actie gestart waarmee geld wordt ingezameld voor het ontwikkelen van tips en tools tegen censuur, digitale spionage en repressie. Voorbeelden hiervan:

In de video wordt de blurring tool ingezet om gezichten te vervagen. Deze ‘ObscuraCam’ is ontwikkeld door Witness. Zij laten zien hoe je video effectief kunt inzetten voor verandering.

Een andere behulpzame partner in de video is Global Voices Advocacy, met een handleiding hoe Tor gebruikt kan worden. Global Voices is een platform voor en door bloggers tegen censuur. Vol heldere uitleg. Over anoniem bloggen met het programma Tor bijvoorbeeld, zodat je vrij kunt spreken en de autoriteiten je niet kunnen traceren.

Het platform MidEastYouth is een online platform voor kritische jongeren waar ze vrijuit kunnen spreken.

Tactical Tech Collective is alles in één: ze geven digitale veiligheidstrainingen, maken tools en handige handleidingen.

Mooi hoor en voor 60 dollar heb je een speakerschelp, mocht het Kickstarterproject van WAAM Industries slagen. Superbe geluidskwaliteit mag je er niet van verwachten, maar je hebt wel een heel mooi object in je kamer/kantoor staan.

The Shellphone Loudspeaker began as a simple solution to expand our phones’ musical capabilities. Our product functions on the same principle as cupping your hand around a speaker to direct and amplify its sound. Through much experimentation, we have refined the Shellphone Loudspeaker to its current functional and elegant form.[…] Our base material is the Whelk shell, a native species of the North Atlantic coast. The Whelk is harvested for food, and the shell is discarded. We receive our shells from a U.S. supplier that warehouses and sells them after the animal is consumed.

#SightSeer neemt een loopje met Leeuwarden #oif058

Ik nam deze week deel aan het Open Innovatie Festival in Leeuwarden en werd daartoe speciaal aangetrokken door de nadruk die lag op open data. Eén van de onderdelen waarbij dat een hoofdrol speelde was de hackathon Kickstart Leeuwarden. Hierbij werden op enigszins willekeurige wijze (“hee, daar is nog een stoel over”) groepjes gevormd die op basis van een aantal beschikbare datasets appconcepten bedachten.

In ons geval bestond het team uit Leander Sikma, Gino van der Baan en Laurien ten Hove (allen student Communication & Multimedia Design bij de NHL), collega Bertus Douwes en onderneemster Elizabeth Pilat. Na het bedenken van een aantal concepten besloten we twee ervan te presenteren: een app voor historische stadswandelingen voor scholieren en een app dat een digitale gids voor de stad vormde. Omdat beide een overlap met elkaar hadden namen we de tweede als uitgangspunt en werkten daarin de historische stadswandeling als voorbeeld uit.

He resultaat, SightSeer, neem een loopje met de stad, werd een dag later gekozen tot beste concept van de hackathon en wordt nu verder ontwikkeld. Daarvoor stelt ICT-dienstverlener Centric capaciteit beschikbaar, evenals hackerspace Frack. Superleuk en ik ben benieuwd waartoe het gaat leiden.
