Tapdancer Will Gains: “My home is my shoes”
“I don’t dance, the shoes do the dancing […] The sound, I love the sound“, zegt de ruim tachtigjarige Will Gains. Deze tapdancer staat centraal in onderstaande korte film van de hand van Debbie Anzalone. Gains danste met de grootste jazzartiesten ter wereld:
Jimmy Durande, Louis Armstrong, Elly Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaugh, Roy Haynes, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Chico Hamilton. These are some of the people that I had chance to listen to, ‘cause I was up front tapdancing and they was back there playing all their music.”
De bezieling waarmee deze man praat over zijn kunst is ontroerend. De dansschoenen lijken voor Gains iets heiligs te hebben: “Everything haven’t gotta be right, everything can come right when I’m dancing. My home is my shoes.” Schitterend.
