Org.blog volg ik al een tijdje, maar op onderstaande video van auteur Neil Gaiman moest ik gewezen worden door een post op Boing Boing. En gelukkig maar, want Gaiman vertelt een goed verhaal. Zijn stelling is dat makers het internet niet moeten vrezen, maar juist moeten omarmen, ook als dat leidt tot het ‘illegaal’ verkrijgen van content. Het tegendeel is waar volgens Gaiman:
Nobody who would have bought your book is not buying it because they can find it for free. What you’re actually doing is advertising. You’re reaching more people. You’re raising awareness.”
Misschien zou Ronald Giphart het ook op die manier kunnen bekijken, in plaats van twitterstellingen als deze te poneren?

People have made floppy drives sing before, but this is my personal take on it.
Features two 3 1/2″ drives and two 5 1/4″ drives connected to a PIC18f14k50 microcontroller. It interfaces to any MIDI source via MIDI over USB. Straight MIDI would also be possible with an additional small circuit and some minor firmware changes. This initial version can respond to all 128 MIDI notes, and pitch bends +/- 2 semitones.
As it can produce only four simultaneous notes, and each drive has a different range and tonal characteristics, best results are obtained by arranging compositions by hand. However, it features two modes of operation: in one mode, MIDI channels 1 through 4 are played directly on floppy drives 1 through 4. In the other mode, all 16 MIDI channels are read, and notes are “intelligently” divvied out on a first-come, first-serve basis. “Note stealing” ensures that melody lines sound, but chords are often cut short. One or the other produces acceptable results for many unmodified MIDI files straight out of your favorite media player.

A scold was defined as a “rude, clamorous woman”. The bridle was used as a punishment for women considered to be spending too much time gossiping or quarrelling. Time spent in the bridle was normally allocated as a punishment by a local magistrate. The custom developed in Britain in the 1500s, and spread to some other European countries, including Germany. When wearing the mask it was impossible to speak. This example has a bell on top to draw even more attention to the wearer, increasing their humiliation. It was used until the early 1800s as a punishment in workhouses.
