Matt Braun is een ontwerper, kunstenaar en DJ uit Philadelphia. Dankzij een post op Create Digital Music kwam ik terecht op zijn website 2d3d5d.com. De eerlijkheid gebiedt te zeggen in eerste instantie vooral aangetrokken door zijn gestemde bierflessenontwerp Tuned Pale Ale:
Tuned Pale Ale is a product that explores the musical affordances in everyday objects and promotes social spontaneity. While drinking beer, people become musically encouraged and often start making start making music with objects around them. This product aims to promote more of this type of social interaction. This product aims to inform users about the musical qualities of existing bottles and to make the bottle a better instrument.”
Drinken voor een fijnere wereld, zou je dus bijna kunnen zeggen. Naast het feit dat er natuurlijk op de flesjes geblazen kan worden, zijn ze ook zo ontworpen dat ze als slagwerkinstrument geschikt zijn. Datzelfde geldt voor de houten box waarin ze verpakt zitten.
Maar naast Tuned Pale Ale heeft Braun talloze andere designprojecten op zijn site staan. Seeing Sound Tees bijvoorbeeld, of Sound Tiles. Alhoewel het meeste aanbod muziekgerelateerd is vond ik ook een fietsgerelateerd ontwerp, Bikers Revenge. Deze studie (dus (nog) niet in de praktijk gebracht) kende ik niet, maar blijkt in 2009 tot veel ophef en reacties te hebben geleid in de bloggercommunity. Deze fiets, genaamd International is ontworpen door Kinfolk Bicycle Company en opvouwbaar en weg te stoppen in de schoudertas hieronder.
Despite the perils of potholes and truckers’ blind spots, team Wallpaper* are committed urban cyclists. So committed that we commissioned a bike, two in fact, that could be broken down (using very clever and super-sturdy S&S couplers), packed in a bespoke bag and loaded on a plane, with no excess baggage charge, and taken with us wherever we went. The project pulled in a wide range of craftsmen collaborators from the US, UK and Japan – frame builders, designers, paint specialists, saddle makers, leather carvers and bag and luggage makers – to ensure that every element of the bike was as beautifully put together as it could be.
Het frame wordt in Osaka handgemaakt door de 71-jarige Shuhichi Kusaka en alhier verkocht, vanzelfsprekend in gelimiteerde oplage. Goed, het kost wel wat, maar dan heb je wel een ros dat meedong naar de Wallpaper Design Awards 2010.
