Abonnees van Wired mogen artikelen gratis delen met anderen

Sinds driekwart jaar hebben we bij het kenniscentrum van Bibliotheekservice Fryslân een abonnement op Wired. Zelf hebben we daar ontzettend veel plezier van, maar ik vond het altijd jammer dat artikelen niet gedeeld konden worden. Het tijdschrift heeft dat zelf blijkbaar ook herkend, want in de februari-editie stelde zij:

“Its 2014. Now you can share stuff you read!”

Abonnees kunnen nu vanuit de digitale editie linken naar volledige artikelen die middels een webviewer door anderen kunnen worden gelezen. Dat is al mooi, maar nog mooier is het dat vanaf dat gelinkte artikel ook geldt voor álle andere stukken in de betreffende editie.

Ik plaatste zojuist dit mooie stuk, maar als je op het menu-icoontje linksbovenaan de pagina klikt wordt de mogelijkheid geboden door de volledige inhoudsopgave mét werkende links te scrollen:

Britse professor: makersplaatsen zijn nu relevanter dan bibliotheken

Mark Miodownik (Professor of Materials and Society, University College Londen) betoogt in een recent artikel in Wired dat makers van alle tijden zijn, maar dat de huidige generatie minder dan voorheen toegang heeft tot gereedschappen die ze nodig hebben.

No, it isn’t the hacking that’s new, but the lack of access to workshops. As cities have grown and population densities increased, so the home workshop has become something of a luxury. The new generation of makers are urban, online, highly social, but with little access to stuff: the tools and diagnostic instruments such as laser cutters, computer-controlled sewing machines and oscilloscopes needed to make contemporary objects. This is certainly our experience. Most of the members of the UCL MakeSpace are staff and students who live in small urban flats with free Wi-Fi access to more books than they will ever read, but with little more than a toolbox at home. They are information-rich but materially poor. So the ability to access a fully kitted-out workshop is extremely liberating for our members. Not only can they repair their toasters and mobile phones, but they can create new stuff that can compete in technological sophistication with commercial products. Hanging out in the MakeSpace becomes not just an enriching social pastime but a way to start a business.

In een voordracht die je hieronder kunt beluisteren stelt Miodownik “that whilst libraries solved a need of 19th century, the requirements of the 21st century have pushed ‘makespaces’ and ‘hackspaces’ above them in necessity.”

Wired stelt een contentmenu samen

In de meest recente Wired trok een artikel, getiteld 101 Signals, mijn aandacht. Hierin werd van een aantal Wired-gerelateerde interessegebieden (Business, Design, Consumer Technology, Science, Government & Security en Culture) aangeven wat daarbinnen de meest interessante online informatiebronnen zijn. In hun eigen woorden:

De redacteuren van Wired stelden een menu samen, bestaande uit 101 bronnen. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn bijvoorbeeld de Twitterfeed van Jacob Appelbaum, het blog Information Aesthetics  of de Spotify-app van Pitchfork. Ze zijn afzonderlijk te bekijken en/of te volgen, maar het is ook mogelijk ze per interessegebied in een RSS-feed op te nemen. Daartoe worden kant en klare OPML-bestandjes aangeboden. Heel erg handig!

Hij tekende voor special effects in Star Trek, maar Michael Sullivan heeft een nieuwe roeping gevonden: het transformeren van Barbie’s en G.I. Joe’s naar robots en die vervolgens de hoofdrol laten spelen in de stop-motion pornofilm The Sex Life Of Robots. Ontzettend mooi gemaakt!

Het was wachten op het moment dat het zover zou zijn, maar nu bericht Wired er over: een bedrijf biedt klanten aan ontwerpen van vervangingsonderdelen te downloaden en zelf uit te laten printen. In dit geval betreft het keyboardfabrikant Teenage Engineering dat knoppen voor haar populaire synthesizer OP-1 aanbiedt. David Möllerstedt, hoofd audio van het bedrijf, zegt:

As an alternative to shipping plastic parts around the world, we let anyone print their own. It’s a really interesting development that 3-D printing is becoming more accessible. It will be exciting to see what people will be doing with the 3-D models, how many that will print them, and if anyone even will go ahead and do custom modifications. Today almost all manuals are distributed digitally, and anyone that wants a hard copy can print one. We think the same will happen with accessories like these.”

Het blijft overigens ook mogelijk vervangingsonderdelen kant en klaar aan te schaffen.
