The Sky Is Rising 2: ook de Europese contentindustrie gaat het voor de wind

Een jaar geleden publiceerde Mike Masnick het rapport The Sky Is Rising. Nu heeft Masnick zijn onderzoek toegespitst op de grootste Europese markten (Duitsland, Frankrijk, Groot Brittannië, Italië, Rusland en Spanje) en concludeert het volgende:

What we found there is similar to what we found last year: not only is the sky not falling, as some would have us believe, but it appears that we’re living through an incredible period of abundance and opportunity, with more people producing more content and more money being made than ever before.

Mike Masnick: A Totally Positive Look at the State of the Industry

Het onderzoek The Sky Is Rising van de hand van Techdirt’s Mike Masnick schetst, in tegenstelling tot de veelvoud van negatieve verhalen over de muziekindustrie, een geheel ander beeld. Om maar bij de woorden van Masnick zelf te blijven:

The sky is rising, not falling. The industry is growing, not shrinking. There’s more content than ever before. There’s more access than ever before. And of course more opportunity than ever before.”

De reden? Het is inderdaad zo dat er minder geluidsdragers worden verkocht, maar dat is niet dé muziekindustrie. Die omvat namelijk veel meer dan albumverkoop alleen, denk bijvoorbeeld aan concertkaartjes, merchandise of licentie-inkomsten. Piratenpartij publiceert boek over auteursrechthervorming

The Case for Copyright Reform is een uitgave van Rick Falkvinge (Piratenpartij Zweden) en Christian Engström (Europarlementariër). Het boek bestaat uit essays over auteursrechthervorming door beide auteurs, aangevuld met bijdragen van Mike Masnick (Techdirt), Ernesto (TorrentFreak) en Michael Geist (Canadese auteursrechtdeskundige). Over de inhoud van het boek:

It not only shows the problems with today’s situation, and traces them back to the history of the copyright monopoly, but also presents a comprehensive proposal detailing how things can be fixed, and shows how the proposal resolves the problems with today’s situation. The proposed solution is realistic and politically doable – not to mention that it has been picked up by the entire Green group in the European parliament.

In The Case for Copyright Reform wordt daarom gepleit voor de legalisering van bestandsuitwisseling, verkorte auteursrechttermijnen, het toestaan van sampling en het afschaffen van DRM. Het boek kan in verschillende formaten hier worden gedownload.
