Het geluid van AIDS
Componiste Alexandra Pajak bracht in 2010 het album Sounds of HIV uit. Dit deed ze door verschillende toonhoogtes toe te wijzen aan de twintig verschillende aminozuren die voorkomen in een met het HIV-virus besmette menselijke cel. Of, wat uitgebreider:
To create the recording, Pajak used the National Institutes of Health’s record of the retrovirus’ genome to identify the thousands of coded letters transcribed onto DNA once a cell is infected. She then assigned specific pitches to the 20 amino acids manufactured in an infected human cell, ordering them according to their affinity for water. To reflect the profound sadness of the disease, Pajak composed the work in the A minor scale and meticulously double-checked that each of the 9,181 nucleotide-notes was in the right place.”

Alfabet en zwarte humor
Vanmorgen maakte ik kennis met schrijver en kunstenaar Edward St. John Gorey, die vooral bekend staat om zijn macabere geïllustreerde boeken. Eén van zijn bekendste werken is The Gashlycrumb Tinies, een mengeling van de uitleg van het alfabet en gitzwarte humor. De New York Times schrijft in zijn necrologie:
The books could be bizarre in the extreme. His alphabet books chronicle the mishaps of unfortunates deceived by fate. ”The Gashlycrumb Tinies” begins with ”A is for Amy who fell down the stairs” (a ghostly child plummeting headlong to her doom) and ends with ”Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin.” The stories of peril are frightful, but with a strong sense of mockery.

De muziekanimatiemachine van Stephen Malinowski
In de muziekbibliotheek van de letterenfaculteit van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen bekeek ik, toen ik daar studeerde, vaak de fantastische grafische partituren van de naoorlogse avantgardecomponisten. Een voorbeeld daarvan zijn bijvoorbeeld deze geweldige werken van Iannis Xenakis. Daaraan moest ik denken toen ik, dankzij een blogpost van Brain Pickings, de Music Animation Machine van Stephen Malinowski leerde kennen. Maar daar houdt de vergelijking met voornoemde grafische partituren eigenlijk wel op. Waar de avantgardisten deze voornamelijk gebruikten omdat hun muzikale wensen niet in notenschrift te vangen was, is de muziekanimatiemachine bedoeld om klanken zo exact mogelijk te visualiseren. Daarmee wordt succesvol getracht inzichtelijk te maken hoe de werken opgebouwd zijn en hoe verschillende partijen ten opzichte van elkaar functioneren. Of in Malinowski’s eigen woorden:
Music moves, and can be understood just by listening. But a conventional musical score stands still, and can be understood only after years of training. The Music Animation Machine bridges this gap, with a score that moves — and can be understood just by watching.”
