Paul Auster op de PlayStation

Mijn favoriete schrijver is Paul Auster. De aandacht werd daarom snel getrokken toen ik vandaag las dat het eerste deel van Auster’s The New York Trilogy, The City Of Glass, wordt uitgebracht voor de Sony PlayStation Portable. Henry Volans van Auster’s uitgever Faber and Faber zegt hierover:

People think of PSP gamers as at the more serious, committed end of the gaming market, but it never does to second guess your market. […] We like the idea of bringing in something unexpected. The PlayStation portable is just another device that can be used to read, and our job as publishers is to make our books as widely available as we can.”

Van de oorspronkelijke versie van City Of Glass (1985) verscheen in 2004 een stripversie, gemaakt door Paul Karasik en David Mazzucchelli. Deze kwam terecht op plaats 45 in The Comic Journal’s “Top 100 Most Important Comics of the Century“. Het is deze bewerking die naar de PlayStation vertaald is.

Reizende vuurtorenbibliotheek

De reisbibliotheek bevatte hoofdzakelijk fictieboeken, maar op verzoek ook technische titels.

Om ook vuurtorenwachters en hun families van boeken te voorzien werd voor hen in 1876 in de Amerikaanse staat Michigan een portable library geïntroduceerd. De reden daarvoor was dat

Lighthouses were often time located in remote areas and as such had no access to city services such as libraries, opera houses, entertainment, etc. that most people enjoyed who lived in a town or city. As light keeping was a lonely profession in most cases supplies were brought to them by lighthouse tender ships. One of the items the tender supplied was a library box on each visit as pictured to the left. Library boxes were filled with books and switched from station to station to supply different reading materials to the families.”

Eigenlijk een voorloper van de bibliobus dus. Geweldig. En met dank overigens aan Boingboing, dat een artikel aan de reisbibliotheek wijdde.

Elk boek uit de reisbibliotheek was voorzien van dit ex-libriszegel.
