Ken Robinson over de gewenste onderwijsrevolutie
Het bevorderen van creativiteit in het onderwijs is volgens Robinson noodzakelijk
Sir Ken Robinson noemt het een klimaatcrisis: de wijze waarop we onze gave van creativiteit verkwanselen. In onderstaande twee TED-lezingen, uit respectievelijk 2006 en 2010 gaat hij hierop uiterst geestig, maar tegelijkertijd ontzettend betrokken en to the point in. Voornoemde klimaatcrisis ligt volgens Robinson voor een groot deel aan het onderwijssysteem. Dat is volgens hem nog steeds geënd op de eisen van de industrialisatie en leidt vooral mensen op voor een (academische) prestatiemaatschappij waarin standaardisatie en conformisme een voorname rol spelen. Omdat hierdoor veel talent miskend wordt is volgens Robinson een revolutie nodig die het educatiesysteem omvormt van een industrialisatie- naar een landbouwmodel. En wel hierom:
And high among them is education, because education, in a way, dislocates very many people from their natural talents. And human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for them. They’re not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstances where they show themselves. And you might imagine education would be the way that happens. But too often, it’s not.”
Robinson’s lezingen staan bol van de scherpe observaties zoals hierboven en zijn alleen daarom al de moeite waard om even de tijd voor te nemen. Geweldig.

Vind bieb-ebooks via de webbrowser
Dat zou toch mooi zijn: een ebook zoeken via Google en daarbij automatisch de catalogi van bibliotheken doorstruinen. En het vervolgens, waar van toepassing, kunnen downloaden, lenen of aanschaffen. De basis hiervoor wordt gelegd met BookServer:
The BookServer is a growing open architecture for vending and lending digital books over the Internet. Built on open catalog and open book formats, the BookServer model allows a wide network of publishers, booksellers, libraries, and even authors to make their catalogs of books available directly to readers through their laptops, phones, netbooks, or dedicated reading devices. BookServer facilitates pay transactions, borrowing books from libraries, and downloading free, publicly accessible books.
Om dit systeem te laten functioneren wordt gewerkt met een open standaard voor de uitwisseling van e-content, OPDS (Open Publication Distribution System). Deze standaard maakt het mogelijk e-content te zoeken, onafhankelijk van locatie, maar geschikt voor alle hardware of apps. OPDS is sinds 2009 in ontwikkeling door een gemeenschap van ebookontwikkelaars, uitgevers, bibliothecarissen en verkopers. Dit vanuit de doelstelling een eenvoudige standaard te creëren om catalogi voor ebooks, magazines en andere digitale content aan te leggen.
In het rapport eBook Feasibility Study for Public Libraries stelt COSLA (Chief Officers of State Library Agencies) glashelder dat de BookServer-benadering voordelen voor bibliotheken oplevert:
Each library system is struggling to create a better user experience for finding and using library materials. Each library system is wondering how to be at the point of need. This is a problem more easily solved together. Because of Amazon, Google, Netflix, and more, people are used to searching and browsing collections at a national level and beyond. They have come to expect this. A BookServer approach for all library eBooks would help strike a blow against centralized, corporate control of intellectual property and promote wider use and appreciation of community resources. A joint BookServer project like Open Library may be a way to apply pressure to Google’s increasingly commercialized search algorithms: providing access to all the world’s information should not mean Google needs to own it, control it, or profit directly from it.
